In June of 2020, WA-BLOC partnered with youth-led organization Black Minds Matter and FEEST Seattle to fight for the removal of police from Seattle Public Schools. We collected more than 20,000 petition signatures from students, staff, parents, and community members alike to pressure the Seattle Public School Board to make a policy amendment. This effort ultimately led to the permanent removal of police (School Resource Officers) from Seattle Public Schools and the district indefinitely ended their relationship with the Seattle Police Department.
WA-BLOC is currently in support of the Stay Housed Stay Healthy campaign which is seeking to improve renter’s rights and prevent COVID-19 evictions from taking place. Right now, disaster gentrification is on the horizon and policy changes must take effect in order to mitigate displacement exacerbated by the pandemic.
